Brent crude slid back below $100 this week on headlines pointing to tentative Iran–U.S. de-escalation, with prints around $98 on May 24 and even near $92 on May 27, but that headline softness is colliding with an unusually tight refined‑product logistics backdrop. Strait of Hormuz traffic remains severely impaired, with hundreds of ships and many tankers still stranded or avoiding the route, clean and dirty tanker volumes down versus pre‑war baselines, and fresh U.S. sanctions on an Iranian agency overseeing shipping through the strait adding compliance frictions; war‑risk insurance and rerouting continue to raise delivered costs for middle distillates into Europe even when flat crude eases. For the UK—which prices wholesale diesel off Brent, ICE gasoil and ARA diesel benchmarks—this means crude’s fall is being partly offset by product tightness and maritime risk premia.
